Of all the trails we rode the
most surprising of all to find were “the hidden gems” in the heart of
Philadelphia like the Wissahickon Valley Park Trail shown below. As it’s
name implies, the trail runs along Wissahickon Creek (a tributary to the
Schuylkill River) on Forbidden Drive. This gravel road was officially named
Wissahickon Drive when it was built in the 1800’s but then received it’s more
familiar name when automobiles were banned from using it in the 1920’s.
Soybean and corn fields like
this one in Tyler State Park were common sights along many of our trail rides.
One of our favorite rides of
the year was the 13 mile Ironton Rail Trail, a loop trail that highlighted the
areas local cement mill industry in addition to it’s railroad heritage.
The Pine Creek Trail was
another one of our favorite rides because of the many waterfalls along the way
in the northern portion, like Stone Quarry Run shown below.
A section of
this trail even had horse drawn wagon tours with a guide that provided
historical and geological commentary.
We were back
again in October amid the falling leaves and rare warm weather to cover the
southern portion of the Pine Creek Trail.
Mo played with
the bears before heading out on a more typical October weather ride in the
morning mist on the Hazleton Rail Trail.
