Unfortunately one of the husband and wife
teams turned back shortly after we started because the woman had a bad knee,
and with her slower pace, didn't feel like she would be able to make the 7.6
mile round trip. We continued on with Elke (who didn't speak English) and
Gunther (a mountain climber) both of whom were avid fast paced hikers. Although
cold and windy, the weather was tolerable until we reached a very exposed area
where ice and snow covered the last set of switchbacks leading up to pass,
resulting in very slippery trail conditions. But Gunther was kind enough to
loan out his hiking poles so that we could all make it to the pass where we
were rewarded with slightly cloud obscured views of the next valley (photo on
left) and our path up with the Ten Peaks in the background (photo on right).
