sunrise. Established in 1906, it has the distinction of being the first
National Monument.

Millions of
years ago, this tower was a volcanic plug buried deep underground. The
vertical striations visible in this photo are hexagon shaped pillars that
formed as the lava cooled. The 867 ft tower became visible when the
surrounding land eroded.
