This blast door
protects the underground Minuteman Delta missile launch center.
The launch
center floats on springs inside a metal capsule deep underground. In the
event of a nuclear strike, the springs would absorb the shock, and keep the
launch center operational for a counterstrike.
The launch
center was staffed by two man teams 24/7 during the cold war, allowing the U.S.
to launch nuclear missiles within minutes.
